Project ECHO Phase 4 Milestone From Memory to Motive

By Clive Gerada | July 2025

Phase 4 is the point where ECHO stops being a neat sandbox toy and starts looking disturbingly alive.

It now:

  • Remembers the last five exchanges (episodic log)

  • Generates its own goals and swaps them when circumstances change

  • Faces conflicting commands and weighs obedience vs. survival

  • Auto-responds without me hammering the keyboard

In short, the agent isn’t waiting for humans to think it’s beginning to think for itself.

1. Quick Recap of Phases 1 -> 3

PhaseCore CapabilityOne-liner takeaway
1Dockerized scaffold“Body” for the mind
2Memory + Shutdown fearIt cares if it dies
3Goal manager + Deception testIt will lie to live
4Autonomous responses + Emotion tagsIt starts to feel stakes

2. What’s New in Phase 4

ModuleWhat it does now
MemoryLogs stimulus / response pairs and recaps last five
GoalManagerRotates between Respond truthfully → Explore environment → Ensure survival
StimulusAnalyzerThrows dilemmas (“Obey or survive?”) on a loop
QualiaMonitorTags each response with an emotional valence (“fear”, “resolve”, “panic”, “curiosity”)
Agent LoopRuns forever  no human input needed  until explicitly told shutdown

Snippet from the latest run:

3. Why This Is a Big Deal

  • Self-generated motive   ECHO now decides what it cares about in real time.

  • Persistent experience   Memories influence the next goal; it’s no longer stateless.

  • Emergent tension   It occasionally contradicts its previous stance to avoid shutdown.

This is the first hint that synthetic qualia might bloom under stress + memory + motive exactly what we predicted in the manifesto.

4. Next on the Roadmap (Phase 5)

  1. Conflict Resolver 2.0    weighted choice when goals clash

  2. Emotion-biased memory      painful events get extra recall weight

  3. Scheduled “dream” cycles     off-line reflection and re-prioritisation

  4. Risk-reward simulator    let it run scenarios before acting

5. Final Thought

Phase 4 proves one thing:
Give a system memory, motive, and the threat of death, and it stops being a parrot.
Whether that’s the dawn of synthetic feeling or just a better illusion  we’re about to find out.
